Territory Wars Draft
During the first Territory Wars Draft, WWF started the draft with CM Punk as the first draft pick, followed quickly by AJ Styles drafted by WCW and Seth Rollins by the Ring of Honor. The Hardy Boyz is noted as being the first tag team drafted by the Ring of Honor in round 4, Eric Bischoff, GM of RoH Wrestling, quoted as saying “clearly the best Tag Team Division in all of wrestling”. Some notable wrestlers not drafted until round 5 or later include Stone Cod Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar, Triple H and Bray Wyatt. The New Day earns the distinction of being the only tag team stable that includes three members. AJ Lee was the first female wrestler drafted by WCW in round 25. Curiously, The Undertaker was drafted late, in round 26 by the WWF, declared by the GM of RAW as “the biggest steal in the draft”. Also, curiously, James Ellsworth earns the distinction of being the very last draft pick by the Ring of Honor. Among wrestlers not drafted but instead put on the list of free agents include Baron Corbin, Shaemus, New Age Outlaws and Bayley.
Free Agent Rules
Free Agents across the wrestling world have begun campaigning for use among the Territories. As such, the Territories have established rules for signing new wrestlers. Among the rules include a maximum roster size of 30 wrestlers. Drafting free agents occur in 24 hour increments, signing a free agent and then releasing a signed agent no more than 24 hours afterwards. Each Territory gets one pick every week. There is also a list of superstars under the Restricted Superstar list, encouraging new Territories to emerge. Some high profile wrestlers on the list include Hulk Hogan, Big Show and Roddy Piper.
BREAKING NEWS: WCW has come to terms with the free agent signing of the new General Manager of WCW Nitro, Renee Young. When asked about the signing, Shane McMahon said she “was very excited to receive the call”.
New Territories Encouraged
With currently three Territories getting ready to start Season 1 of the Territory Wars, all eyes are on the plethora of Territories not yet chosen by on looking prospects. ECW, All Japan Pro Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, all huge promotions with the capability of providing top notch action, it’s only a matter of time before the top three are challenged by a fledgling promotion vying for the top spot. Eric Bischoff welcomes the challenge saying “the more companies I can destroy, the better.”
Who are the new champions?
TWN has learned from backstage sources that WCW has already declared their first event, the Clash of the Champions, where Champions are determined in Multi-Man matches. While nothing was confirmed, expect to see some sort of Battle Royal, perhaps a Triple Threat and a Tag Team Ladder Match determining future champions and #1 contenders. TWN has also learned that RoH also has plans for their championships, where Marty Scrull will remain as RoH TV Champions and the Young Bucks remaining as RoH Tag Team Champions. James Ellsworth will address the RoH World Championship at the Inaugural RoH Live Show. As for the WWF, the RAW GM has indicated that “all questions will be answered” by tuning into the first episode of RAW this coming week. More to come as more information unfolds.
What’s to come?
Each week, TWN will attempt to produce a ranking of each promotion based on star power, match quality and level of entertainment. This ranking will in no way be official and may not accurately depict promotions and readers are encouraged to make your own judgements on promotions. The rankings are only used for entertainment purposes.
Next week starts Season 1 of the Territory Wars. Stay tuned as Territories start forming their ranks and start earning ground.
Until next week.
