TWN ASKS: Mr. Cornette, on behalf of TWN welcome to the Territory Wars. Does coming in after the inaugural Territory Wars Draft give you a sense of being behind the eight ball for ratings? Does having limited access to superstars limit your chances of being successful?
Jim Cornette: Well thank you very much for that lovely hospitable welcome to Territory Wars. Now would I have liked to participate in the inaugural draft? Absolutely, it would have certainly been to our benefit. It doesn't make me feel as though The National Wrestling Alliance is behind the eight ball however. Now I can tell you that It wouldn't have changed the NWA very much at all. A few names here and there, but that doesn't mean you won't be seeing those names coming over to The NWA in the near future anyway! Whether through trades, signings, whatever it may be. In all honestly from a negotiation standpoint, it actually helped us compile a larger roster with bigger names for a lesser price. I have all the respect in the world for CM Punk, but if NWA was a part of the draft, Mr. Punk would not have been drafted number one overall. All and all, I'm ready to go to war with the roster we were able to compile heading into our first show this weekend.
TWN ASKS: What is your promotion offer to viewers that the WWE, WCW of RoH lacks? Are you looking to tap into the audience's nostalgic nature?
Jim Cornette: I think the key to a being successful wresting promotion is to know your audience. While you do have all different segments your trying to reach out to, there is a core group that your company connects with the most. I think our roster speaks for itself. Will the NWA have a nostalgic feel? Your damn right it will. Are we trying to tap into a segment of the population that we feel has recently been ignored? Correct. When you look at the ratings of recent wrestling shows, the spikes all come from that known name coming back for one last run. Well, we've signed many superstars who have had great careers in professional wrestling, and still have more to give! They aren't here for " one last run" but here to prove they earned their reputation and entertain an entirely new generation of fans. All this talk of passing the torch is exactly what is wrong with the world today. You tell me, if I'm busting my tail week in and week out, training to become The World Champion, now I earn that title, I win the big match. Why would I go and start defending my title every single week on , I don't know, let's say a Monday Night, to every schmuck that THINKS they deserve it. I'm going to sit back, defend my title once every thirty days if thats what my contract calls for, and limit the number of chances of someone catching me off guard and taking that title away from me. You earn the top spot, and when you get it, you don't let it go.
TWN ASKS: Internet polls show that reinventing older superstars generally leads over reintroducing older superstars. Is there a plan to reinvent mainstays such as Hulk Hogan, The Outsiders or Sting?
Jim Cornette: Personally, I don't believe there needs to be much of a reinvention guys you just mentioned. I will say however, there is a new fire burning inside each and everyone of those guys after not being drafted. There is a hunger there that may have been missing in their most recent years. Now I don't see eye to eye with every name on our roster, but the NWA is a blank slate, and I'm willing to offer the opportunity to become The NWA World Heavyweight Champion to anyone that proves they deserve it. Whether that person is Hulk Hogan or Marty Jannetty! If guys tweak their approach and image throughout their journey in The NWA, and the fans like it,then the more power to them. I don't think it's a necessity , and if you disagree well then I'm looking forward to the opportunity to prove the internet polls wrong! I'd like to thank you very much for your questions, and remind you to tune into NWA Main Event this Saturday Night!
